using infrared communication. Each stone has its own inherent color, red, green, or blue. When a stone is placed within range of another stone, they begin communicating. Each stone will broadcast its inherent color as well as receive the color of any stones nearby. The stones capture these incoming messages and change their color accordingly, creating all colors along the visible light spectrum. While Stoneglow began as an experiment in electronics, we often found ourselves thinking about what engages people in play. The size, texture, and shape of the stones were crucial to the overall design. We wanted to create functional art that encouraged touch, stimulated curiosity, and was approachable by everyone. The focus was to engage through play. As it turns out–adults enjoyed the toy as well. We discovered in our user testing that girls wanted to spell words and the boys were more interested in constructing runs that accelerated or bounced the ball. The 3" square blocks are magnetic and can be attached to vertical surfaces like doors or refrigerators. When a copper ball is rolled along the run, the circuit is closed and LED's in each block turn on. LetterRun was a collaboration with Ben Chao at NYU.
